At present in the oblast there are 3 theatres under the Department of culture and arts. These are the following theatres:

In 2005 the main objectives of these regional institutions were development of dramatic art directed at the propaganda of the best works of Russian and world literature; inter-regional cooperation among theatres.

In 2005 the thetres staged 891 plays of which 17 were premieres

In 2007 the Kirov regional drama theatre will celebrate its 130th anniversary. In 2006 the Teatr na Spasskoy Kirov state theatre for young spectators celebrated its 70th anniversary. This year the Kirov puppet theatre will continue its Puppets for Children project. In this project the theatre troupe tours the oblast's orpanages.
