The biological resources of the Kirov oblast are attractive as the source for the development of investment and business initiatives. The iological resources include non-arboreous vegetational resources, water biological resources, hunting resources.
The non-arboreous vegetational resources (mushrooms and fungi, berries, medicinal herbs) of the Kirov oblast's 14 districts are listed in the state cadastre.
The biolological productivity ofthe above-mentioned resources is around 2.5 mln tons, of which available for utilization are berries (aprox. 60 thousand tons), mushrooms (150 thousand tons), medicinal herbs (6 thousand tons)
There grow 28 species of berries and fruit-bearing plants in the Kirov oblast. Seven of which are in abundance and of industry quantities, they are the cranberry, the red whortleberry, the whortleberry, the raspberry, black currant, bird cherry, ashberry. The oblast possesses 36% of the cranberry resources in the Privolzhsky federal district. Among the administrative districts the richest in berries and fruits are the Verkhnekamsk, the Podosinovets, the Darovskoy, the Luza and the Nagorsk districts.
More than 250 species of edible mushrooms grow on the territory of the Kirov oblast of these species 45 are allowed for laying in (Sanitation regulations on laying in, processing and selling of mushrooms. 1993). The oblast possesses 20% of the mushroom resources in the Privolzhsky federal district.
Of 1,116 species of plants growing in the Kirov oblast 228 species (20.3%) are medicinal herbs. The medicine uses 138 species of wild plants (12.7%) listed in the Federal pharmacopeia of the USSR (1987-1990).
