Government of Kirov region

The oblast's main mineral resources are phosphorites (48% of Russia's resources), peat, glass-melting sands, carbonate rocks, sand-gravel mix, various clays, therapeutic muds including sapropel, underground mineral and fresh waters. Based on these resources it's possible to organize production of construction-, finishing- and thermo-insulating materails; organic-mineral fertilizers; sorbents; medical preparations; it's also possible to organize bottling and sellng of medicinal mineral-, table mineral- and pure groundwater etc.

In the Verkhnekamsk district there is the Vyatka-Kama deposit of nodular phosphrites, one of the largest in Europe, having estimated useful resources of more than 2 bln. tons, covering about 2 thousand square kilometers. Also the deposit contains a lot of various useful minerals such as haydite clays, glauconic sands with high potassium contents, shale oil.

In the kirov oblast there is one of the richest deposits of peat in the Russian Federation. There has een prospected 1734 peat locations estimated volume is 1,100.4 mln tons. The deposits are concentrated mostly in the north-eastern part (53%) and central part (17%) of the oblast. Currently 17 locations are being exploted, 187 locations are considered promising for the future prospecting.

The gien data show how feasible it is to use peat for various purposes:

  • Ecology. To produce peat-based sorbents for neutralization and collection of oil spills;
  • Agriculture. To increase the soil's fertility and as a result the collected crop with the help of peat as for part of compost;
  • Development of small-scale power production. Peat is used as a fuel (lump peat, peat briquets, milled peat) and as sources for the production of combustible gas.

The major peat-extracting company in the oblast is the VyatkaTorf closed company. It owns all the necessary machinery, railways and peat-processing facilities, has qualified specialists. The company's current processing capacity allows to extract up to 1 mln. tons annually. At the same time the company has a potential for further development and growth in peat extraction. The given data of the peat resources demonstrate good chances of peat's being used in power production and as household fuel. Presently the share of local fuels in the oblast's fuel balance is very small. The oblast's Government is interested in the development of local power production based on the local kinds of fuel and mostly of peat. Considering the fact that peat's share in the oblast's fuel balance is less than 10%, there are conditions for investments into the production of the peat-based fuel as well as into the reconstruction of the communal facilities, so they could use peat as fuel.

In the oblast there have been explored rich deposits of carbonates suitable for the production of gravel, lime carbonate, powdered carbonate, cement. The engineering infrastractre is well-developed.

On the base of the Osinovsky deposit of glass-melting sands in the Belaya Kholunitsa district it is possible to organize glasswork to produce construction and finishing materials such as: glass-mosaic tiles, glass marble, decorative glass chips, foam glass, decorative foam-glass panels, decorative gravel chips.

On the territories of the Omutninsk and the Afanasievo districts there have been prospected a tight clusterof 5 oilfields totalling their estimated volume at 6 mln tons. These resources make it possible to organize new to the oblast oil-producing and oil-processing industries.

Another territory worth social-economic development is the Sovetsk district. The basis for its development can be mineral resources prospected there. In this district have been prospected several rich deposits of carbonates suitable for the production of gravel, lime carbonate, powdered carbonate, cement. There exists quarring industry there and the engineering infrastractre is well-developed.
