The forest is the major natural resource of the Kirov oblast. Forests cover more than 67.2% of obast's territory.

The total wealth of standing wood is 1.2 bln cubic meters, of wich 673.6 mln cubic meters are conifers. The oblast's wood-cutting plan is 15.7 mln cubic meters including 6.6 mln cubic meters of conifers, annual growth of forests is 18 mln cubic meters. The volume of timber in aged and overaged forests is 462.9 mln cubic meters. There is continuous ageing and overageing of woods as the wood-cutting plan is performed at less than 44%. The oblast's Government sees it of paramount importance to attract investments to develop timber industry and is ready to support creation of new facilities and implementation of new waste-less technologies of wood-processing.
